HANDMADE GARDENS specializes in high quality, interesting and unusual annuals, perennials and nursery stock. We have a large selection of trees including over 20 varieties of locally grown Japanese maples, along with a great selection of boxwood, from small container-grown plants to large 24-inch dwarf English. We are currently featuring a large selection of paperbark maple (Acer griseum). At HANDMADE we are concentrating on deer-resistant plants. If deer are a problem where you garden we can offer you Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia) in three cultivars; skip laurel; a number of varieties of Cryptomeria; and Skimmia japonica, a flowering broadleaf evergreen with beautiful red fruit that, because of its size and growth rate, can be used in foundation planting. Our selection of annuals is based use as well as interest. We favor 4-inch and 6-inch pots of annuals that can be combined to make arrangements in containers, as opposed to just bedding plants. A good example of this is Dichondra Silver Falls (Dichondra argentea Silver Falls), a plant used as a draping accent on the edge of a container. This fabulous intertwining silvery plant can also be used in beds as ground cover. For our perennials, we peruse the availability lists of a number of nurseries, selecting the most interesting and underused plants that merit attention and are practical and arresting. We feature hellebores from Sunny Border Nurseries and local hybridizer David Culp.
